The problem here is that this comparison doesn't explore the relationship between VFICX and the VTSMX+VFITX combination.

Mainly, because I don't want to own Mortgage-backed or long-term bonds. When a risk has materialized in the past, it certainly is a legitimate risk. VBILX is 6.5 years while VBTLX is 6.1 years which are close enough that I consider them the same. Not that you have a choice if you are under/over $10,000.

Aggregate Bond Index Benchmark Index Description: The index measures the performance of the U.S. investment grade bond market. VBTLX might be the right fund for you, just don't think that the extra return was any kind of free lunch.

The Short-Term fund does hold a higher percentage of US government bonds (64% vs the 50:50 ratio in VBILX).
